How To Tie A Uni Knot
You've been fly fishing for a while now and the time has
come to learn a new knot – the uni knot. For many anglers this is an essential
knot that should be mastered as it's used in almost every freshwater scenario
all over the world. It's particularly helpful if correctly tied correctly for
tying together monofilament or braided line leader material to the fly line with
a loop-to-loop connection.
This loop is created when you tie in the second line, which
allows for quick changes of leaders without having to cut and retie each time
you want to change between different types of leader (e.g., tapered, furled or
level). It's a bit difficult to describe with words alone so check out these
step-by-step photos for a visual of the process.
THE KNOT
1. Directly after tying on your fly, pull about 20cm or 8
inches of line through the first loop and then double it back against itself,
leaving a small gap between them as shown.
2. Now, take the doubled line and make 5 or 6 turns around
your index finger, making sure that the turns are tight and close together.
3. Pass the tag end of the line (the end opposite the fly)
through the small loop you created in step 1, and then hold on to it with your
thumb and forefinger.
4. Carefully ease the wraps off your finger, making sure
that the turns stay in place, and then give the tag end a sharp tug to tighten
the knot. You may also want to clip off any excess line.
And there you have it! Your very own uni knot, which is
strong and reliable. You can also attach leader material to the fly line by
snipping the tag end of the uni knot and stripping off about 5 inches of mono
or braid before tying on your new leader with a blood knot (a super strong
double overhand knot).
As mentioned, this is an essential knot that should not be
overlooked as a crucial part of a fisherman's kit. If not done properly, the
knot will simply not hold so take your time and practice – you'll be tying uni knots like a pro in no time!
