What is a spinning reel good for?

 Fishing reels come in different sizes, shapes, and styles. A spinning reel is a great option because it can be used for both saltwater or freshwater environments. The spinning reel is lightweight and compact so it won't get in your way when you are out on the water. This means that it's easy to bring with you everywhere! Spinning reels also allow you to control how much line is on the spool by using a clutch mechanism which will help you avoid tangles while at sea. They're easier to use than other types of reels too, so they are perfect for beginners who are just starting out fishing!

I often hear people asking such questions as: What is a spinning reel good for? or How does it work? Yet, they still think that you can't cast with spinning reels. In this post, I will try to explain the basics of using this type of fishing gear and its advantages over other types.

A spinning reel is probably the most common type of fishing gear, so I think it’s worth clearing up what it actually is. A spinning reel consists of a hollow spool, on which another smaller spool is placed that has a line winding onto it. This construction allows for very quick and easy exchange of bait or lure. The smaller spool can be turned sideways so as to prevent the line from getting tangled up.

This design of a fishing gear has many advantages:

- It's easy to cast and retrieve;

- Unlike other types, it doesn't twist or tangle lines;

- They usually have very smooth and well-performing systems that let you quickly change lures and baits.

The way a spinning reel works is pretty simple. The spool has an axle that goes through its axis, so it can freely rotate around it. In order to cast the line with a bait or lure one needs to turn the spool so as to wrap it onto itself by rotating from above. In order to keep the line from getting tangled, you need to hold the spool with your thumb and index finger and turn it sideways.

When a fish bites on bait or lure, a rod starts bending which is transferred through a fishing rod down into a reel. The rotation of the smaller spool that has been wound up beforehand by rotating from above, helps in pulling in a big fish. Some reels have a special knob that you turn when reeling to prevent the spool from turning backward.

These are not all of the differences between different types of reels. Nowadays there are many kinds of fishing rods and reels for every type of fishing: fresh or saltwater, big or small fish. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages, depending on what kind of fishing you are doing.
