Choose Right Fishing Rod For Swordfish

Swordfish is a powerful and big fish. To catch a swordfish you need to have a strong rod otherwise it will break or snap your fishing line. A proper rod, reel and tackle are required for a successful journey with the swordfish.

There are many kinds of rods available in the market based on your requirement, however choosing the right one is very important for your fishing rod for swordfish.

Swordfish rods are usually made of fiberglass, graphite or a combination of the two materials. Graphite has an edge over other types of material because it's tougher and more resistant to breakage. However, fishing rods that are entirely made of graphite are usually heavier than other types which is fine for most recreational anglers.

There are number of factors to be considered while choosing a right fishing rod like power, length, flexibility, action or tip and so on.

Power of fishing rod depends upon two things- Length of the rod and the stiffness. A longer rod means more power than shorter one because it can flex further. Also, stiffer rod have more power compared to the flexible one but they are not recommended for beginners because it can be difficult to handle.

Length of fishing rods changes according to the purpose of fishing, different species of fish recommend different lengths of rods. Generally, the beach seines and bottom longline require 30-40 foot range rods, the light tackle deep water fishing requires 20-30 foot range rods. While trolling and drift fishing 30-40 foot range rods are perfect. Another factor to consider is the line weight that can be trolled with your rod. There are different types of lines available in the market, however the most common one are -

Monofilament, braided and fused lines. Monoline is not recommended for swordfish because it's not strong enough to pull a big fish back into the water from depth, but if you are using a mono line then make sure it's at least 50-pound class. Braided fishing lines are great for surf fishing and bluefishing, they have a similar strength to mono line, but are much thinner. If you are using a braided fishing line ensure that it is of high thread count. The last one fused lines have the similar properties as braided ones, they are also thin enough to cast long distances and work great for surf fishing.

Swordfish rods' action mainly depends on the species of fish you are targeting. Generally, the fast action rods are good for bottom fishing while slow or moderate actions are perfect for trolling. Action of a rod also depends on your fishing style and species of fish, if you are running a boat then having a long light rod is great because it can help you to feel bites without putting too much pressure on the fish. If you are using a boat rod then make sure the length of rod is between 8-15 feet. But if you are fishing from shore, it will be better to have a short heavy action rod because they allow angler to put more pressure on the fish which helps in setting the hook firmly.

"Action" also defines how the rod handle the weight of the fish during a fight. A fast "action" is stiffer which helps in sending baits long distances while slow action rods are more flexible, they are great for fishing live baits on the bottom.

Long rods are good for blue-water where you can reach into distance to set your baits or lures. But if you are targeting smaller species of fish like tuna or dorado than short rods are perfect because they can help in casting baits or lures short distances which is important for this type of species.

After considering the length and action of rod, another factor to consider is flexibility of fishing rod. For surf fishing or bottom fishing, a stiffer rod with high action is best because it can put enough pressure on the fish to set the hook firmly. If you are using a boat, flexible rods work better because they allow you to feel bites and drops without putting too much pressure on the fish.

Swordfish fishing is done by trolling or bottom fishing method. There are two types of trolling- One is using a downrigger and other is by using a planer. In both cases, setting up proper rod can help in successful trip. For bottom fishing, you will need a heavy action powerful rod from 8-15 feet length with a fast "action". Braided line works best for this method. While in the case of trolling rods for swordfish, long and flexible 8-15 foot range fishing rod with a moderate action is recommended.

Before choosing the right rod for your next swordfish trip remember these factors and you will be able to choose the best rod for yourself.
