How To Choose Fishing Rod For Snook

Choosing the right fishing rod for snook is not that easy task to do especially if you are a beginner. I will guide you with this article on how to choose the best one.

Introduction:

Snook, also called as common snook, is popular species of fish found in shallow coastal waters throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Snook belongs to the family of Centropomidae, which consists of many species like black basses, sunfishes and other types of snooks. The scientific name of a common snook is "Centropomus undecimalis".

Snook have a large head with a short rounded snout. It's body is very deep and compressed. Anal fin of snook is found in between or just slightly ahead of pelvic fins and it has 19 to 22 soft rays. Snook has a large mouth that forms an oblique line, which extends beyond the eyes and its lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper.

Snook's color varies from olive brown to bright red with silver sides and a golden belly.

Best Rod for Snook:

Snook is an aggressive feeder, which feeds on crabs, shrimp, menhaden and mullet. It also feeds on octopus and squid, but these types of food are not preferred by snook. A large number of anglers target this species of fish because of its large size and good fight. Snook can grow up to a very large size that varies from 5 pounds to more than 100 pounds. There is no best fishing rod for snook but following are some factors that can help you in choosing the right one:

1) Rod Length:

If you want to land a snook, you will require a longer rod because of its large size.

2) Rod Action:

Snook requires medium to heavy action fishing rod that has strong backbone to handle powerful strikes. You need moderate fast action rod with high power to securely stop the big fish before netting it.

3) Fishing Line:

Snook fishing line should vary according to its size, but 15 to 20 pound is best suitable for it. If the fish is large, you should go for 50 pound monofilament fishing line. For catching smaller snook use light lines like 6 or 8 pound test with lighter sensitive pole that can bend easily when a fish strikes.

4) Lure or Bait:

Small fish like pinfish, grunts and finger mullet are some of the common live baits used for snook fishing. Snook is a predator fish that feeds on crabs, shrimp, menhaden and mullet. As mentioned before it also feed on octopus and squid but these types of food are not preferred by snook.

5) Fishing Location:

Snook is a migratory fish that can be found near the shore line from Florida to Texas, as well as South America and Caribbean region. It prefers shallow waters with large number of mangrove trees. Snook also feeds on mullet, which is one of the major food source in the mangrove swamp. It can be found near rocks, grasses or oyster bars at drop off points where small bait fish are available in large number.

When you go to catch snook, don't get tempted for big game fishing because they are too heavy to handle and it's not easy to get them out of water.

Snook fishing requires lot of patience, repetition and technique. If you know the right way to catch it, then there is no match for snook in terms of fight. If you are looking for big gamefish like marlins, sailfish or other types of snook, then go for heavy equipment because it's the only way to catch them. But if you are looking for snook, which can be handled easily by young kids, older people or women then it's best to go with light rods and reels that are easy to operate.
