Best Walleye Fishing Rods

 Wading through all of the rods on the market today can be a chore, to say the least.

As I have been fishing for over 25 years now and been an avid outdoors writer as well as a guide, I am asked often which is the best walleye rod?

The good news is that there are many great fishing rods out there today for all types of walleye fishing so finding a rod that works well is not difficult.

In this article I will give you several different rods that work very well and get the job done when it comes to putting walleyes in the boat!

The first type of rod that I love using when fishing for walleyes is an ultra-light.

These are usually 5 foot to 6 foot in length and are great when fishing for walleyes around shallow structure such as weeds or wood.

The ultra-lights are very versatile because you can use them braided line, fluorocarbon or monofilament depending on conditions.

This type of rod will allow you to feel the walleye bite and then give you that extra trigger to set the hook.

When fishing rocky or weedy areas a 7 foot medium power spinning rod is a great alternative.

The reason being is they have enough backbone to penetrate the vegetation but still allow for good lure action in open water when not snagged up.

This type of rod is also great for fishing deeper water to bottom structure such as reefs or deep brush piles.

The next type of rod that I like to use when walleye fishing is a medium heavy power bait casting rod in the 7 foot range.

These rods have the backbone needed to knock out big walleyes from cover and have enough power to cast larger lures some distance.

They are also good for trolling crank baits on the weed edge on deep water lakes where walleyes hold up in weedy areas and you need to reach them!

The last type of rod that I like to use when fishing for walleyes is a medium heavy power jig and worm rod.

The reason is I love using jig and worm combos for fishing deep brush piles, laydowns and reefs on the weed edge or drop offs in deeper water lakes where walleyes hold up.

This type of combination will allow you to fish a jig as well as flip a worm into those hard to reach places that most anglers will not fish and the most productive places to catch walleyes.

One of my favorite rods in this category is a Falcon Rod company Jig and Worm model which has a super sensitive tip that allows you to feel everything when fishing brush piles or reef areas with tons of cover!

Falcon Rod Company makes some great rods at very affordable prices and if you haven't tried their new Jig and Worm model I would highly recommend it!

So as you can see there are many different rod styles that work great for walleye fishing.

If you plan on fishing deep brush piles or mainly weed edge areas then I would suggest leaning towards a medium heavy power bait casting rod with a medium heavy power jig and worm rod being a good choice as well.

If you plan on trolling crank baits or fishing deep water reefs and drop offs, a medium heavy power bait casting rod is the best choice.



Finally if you mainly fish shallow areas such as weed beds then an ultra-light spinning rod would be perfect for you!

So remember when choosing a rod for walleye fishing it all comes down to the type of areas you will be fishing.

As in my opinion, ultra-lights are great for shallow water weed beds in the spring and summer, medium heavy power jig and worm rods are best in deep brush piles or reef areas where walleye lay up and medium heavy power bait casting rods are best for trolling crank baits or fishing deep water reefs and drop offs to catch walleyes.

Perfect Bait For Kingfish

  There are many kinds of fish in the world. However, there are only two kinds who hold their tail upright while swimming through the ocean. They're called "Kingfish" and "Queenfish". Of course, they're not really royalty. Nor do they fight each other with crowns and scepters. The only thing that distinguishes the two are their tails.
