How To Choose Fishing Lures For Grouper

I love fishing for Grouper, it's a great sport fish to catch. It can provide hours of entertainment and if your using the right type of fishing lures they can be caught on light tackle as well, a 25lb grouper is a good size fish.

Tackle:

Fishing for Grouper with light tackle comes down to a few basics, you need a medium light action fishing rod and a high quality reel that can hold around 300-500 yards of 30lb test line.

As for the type of Grouper Lures well this will depend on where you're going to be fishing because there are different types of Grouper in different parts of the world, I'll be talking about fishing for Grouper in the Caribbean and around Florida.

Caribbean Groupers - Most of the groupers you'll find in the Caribbean are what's known as Gray or Common Groupers (Epinephelus Fasciatus), this is a good eating fish and to catch them you're best chances are going to be with live bait.

Florida Groupers - In Florida there is a larger type of grouper known as the Goliath Grouper (Epinephelus itajara), this fish can grow up to 400lbs and if your using light tackle they can provide some excellent sport. To catch them on light tackle you're going to need some larger Grouper Lures.

Grouper Lures - When fishing for Grouper in the Caribbean with light tackle you want to use a lure that is between 4 and 6 inches long that has a weight of 5/16oz or more, this will allow you to get further down into waters where they live.

For Goliath Groupers in Florida you want to use a lure that is larger, around the 8 inch mark and weighs 1/2 oz - 3/4 oz. This allows you to get down deeper into their living area.

The best type of fishing lures for catching Grouper will be metal jigs and spoons, they have the high metal content the fish are looking for. You can also use deep divers but these will not fit through the eyelets on your fishing rod so you'll need to put a split ring through first, once attached to the jig head they're good too.

Bottom bouncers are another option but it does mean that you're going to have to add a separate weight to get them down into the water, if you can do this then they're good.

When choosing the best type of fishing lures for Grouper in your area choose ones that are not too brightly coloured and have a metal body, keep in mind how deep where going to be fishing so you'll need to get ones that will dive down to the depth you'll be fishing.

That's it, if your going to Grouper fishing in Florida or elsewhere choose the best type of fishing lures for Grouper from the above and have a great time catching these amazing fish.
