Fly Fishing Guide For Newbies

I never thought that I would be into Fly Fishing. I never believed in myself that I could use something like a fishing rod to catch fish. Not until my friend asked me if I wanted to go on an adventure with him. He had this big smile plastered on his face the whole time he was talking, and after close to an hour of talking about it. I finally agreed to go on the trip with him. So, how does fly fishing work? Fly fishing is where you use a thin string and hook it through the mouth of a fish on water, sounds pretty easy huh? Well, maybe but it also depends on your level of expertise on this activity.

The only way I would be able to take you with me on this journey is if I teach you how to fish. This sport requires a lot of skill and patience, but if successful, it will be worth the wait. Fly fishing is not for everyone, it takes a certain type of person that has the guts and patience for this sport. We will start from basics, since you have never used a fly rod before, it will be better to start off with the basics first. I can teach you how to cast, what is entailed on fishing and other related topics.

Are you ready to learn? Are you ready to catch some fish and feel the excitement that comes with fly fishing? If your answers are yes, then we're on our way!

First we need to get a rod for this activity. Rods can either be bought online or in an actual fishing store. You have two options when it comes to rods, either you would buy a fly rod or a spinning rod. Fly rods are usually longer and more flexible compared to the latter.

Fly rods are usually used for salt water fishes because they give the fish more action when it struggles with the hook. Spinning is recommended for freshwater fishing because of its flexibility which means so much less pressure on the fish. You can choose what type of fishing you would like to do so if you are not sure, it is best to ask your instructor about this.

Let's say that you have already decided on the fly rod, now we need to find the correct weight for it. The weight of a rod refers to how light or heavy a fight it can take. This is determined by the weight of the fish you are trying to catch. The lighter the rod, the smaller the chance of catching bigger fishes.

The boring part is choosing a fly fishing hook for your rod, you have to measure it so that it fits perfectly with your line and other parts of your equipment. If uncertain about the correct size, it is best to consult your instructor on this or have someone with experience do the work for you.

I will be using my favorite type of fly fishing hook for this illustration. It has a slim wire and a light tip which helps me land more fish. Many fishermen choose the circle hooks because they are very efficient in catching fishes. This hook is straight and has a thicker wire, this type of hook is used for saltwater fishing.

If you would like to know more about the different types of hooks available in the market, I suggest that you read Daniel F Coyle's Fishing Hooks: A Comprehensive Guide . There are also other people who prefer offset worm hooks instead of the normal round ones.

The weights of your fishing line is similar to the weight of your fly rod, but not exactly identical since it has to be adjusted according to its length. A longer rod requires heavier lines in order to balance out the extra length. It is best if you weigh your equipment first before purchasing new ones just so that you would be able to make the necessary adjustments when you get home.
