Best Bait For Walleye Fishing

Walleye fishing is one of the most popular and sought-out freshwater sportfishing. There is a certain thrill that comes with landing a great walleye and having it on your tag. When I was young, we used to travel all over the state of Michigan in pursuit of this wonderful fish. We went everywhere from big deep rivers like the Big Manistee, Muskegon and the Pere Marquette to small ponds in the mid-west. Our family had a love of walleye fishing that is hard to describe.

The fun part about walleye fishing is catching them! I have tried many different baits for walleye fishing but my favorite has always been a simple nightcrawler. While they are not the most attractive bait in the world, I have had fantastic success with them. The trick is to make sure you know how to fish a nightcrawler for walleye and that means knowing where and when to use it.

Walleye fishing becomes much more exciting when you catch one on your very next cast.

The nightcrawler is the perfect bait to use in many different situations. I like to carry a few of them for fishing small ponds that may not offer much in the way of other types of baits or lures. Nightcrawlers are also extremely effective on windy days when you can't use a lure. Knowing how to fish a nightcrawler for walleye is very simple. Just cast it out, let it sit for a few seconds, give the line a small tug to make the worm wiggle and your bait is off. You can also try different types of retrieves at this point depending on what you are fishing for.

The nightcrawler is a very natural bait and can be used to fish for other types of freshwater fish as well. I have caught many different species on a nightcrawler including bass, pike and panfish. It has been my "go-to" bait when I wanted something that was going to catch anything that swam in the water.

The bait is very easy to carry and can be stored in your pocket if you are fishing for panfish or bass. Bass fishermen like nightcrawlers because they offer fish the chance to get their fill of natural food before they take the hook. I have even seen bass fisherman drop a piece of nightcrawler on the top of their bait can to get a school of bluegill to start eating before they even hit the water.

Nightcrawlers are very organic and I have seen some fisherman catch a few dozen in a single day on a river or lake that was very heavily populated with them. It is also very easy to tell when you have one on your hook because the worm is going to wiggle very fast when a fish takes it. This is another reason that they are so effective on small ponds because you don't have to worry about spooking the fish by using a loud lure or one with too much action.
